Why Does The Southern Hemisphere Seem Warmer Than The Northern Hemisphere?

And why it’s actually cooler

If you are a weirdo like me and peek in on the weather for random cities around the world, you might notice something odd. The weather in the Southern Hemisphere always seems to be warmer than the Northern Hemisphere. This is especially true during the winter months when many large cities seem to have stable temperatures with highs between 50 and 60 F and lows between 40 and 50 F.

For those of you who live in the upper reaches of the Northern Hemisphere, that probably sounds lovely. You rarely see freezing temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere, and large amounts of snow seem rare.

You never hear about Australia being buried in a blizzard.

What gives? Is the Southern Hemisphere noticeably warmer than the Northern Hemisphere?

No. In fact, the opposite is true. Despite having consistently mild and stable temperatures, the Southern Hemisphere is actually cooler than the Northern Hemisphere. And the difference is noticeable.

The Southern Hemisphere is, on average, about three degrees cooler (1.5 C) than the Northern Hemisphere.

So why does it seem like it's hotter? Two primary reasons.
