What’s The Deal With Flag Day? — June 14th and America’s Lamest Holiday

June 14th is Flag Day, and if that causes you to stifle a yawn, you are not alone. Flag Day appears on many US calendars and evokes little to no feelings of any kind other than apathy. So what's up with Flag Day? Why is it celebrated on June 14th? It turns out that June 14th is actually a pretty momentous day in American history and it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves.

Flag Day and the Flag Act

Flag Day is June 14th because that is the day that the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act of 1777. The Flag Act established an official flag for the burgeoning United States of America. The act reads:

Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.
