What About The First Sino-Japanese War?
Everyone has heard of the Second Sino-Japanese war, but not the first
The Second Sino-Japanese War erupted in the 1930s as a precursor to World War II. The Japanese invasion of China launched a conflict that would last over a decade and leave millions of people dead. Many people know about the Japanese actions in China and their creation of the Manchukuo puppet state. Yet, few people know about the First Sino-Japanese War, the preceding conflict that gave the second war its name.
The First Sino-Japanese War took place in 1894 and was the first aggressive international action taken by the newly reformed Japanese government. It only took forty years from the opening of Japan to the outbreak of a major international conflict. The First Sino-Japanese War saw Japan cut its teeth on international warfare and saw them gain territory and prestige. The success of Japan in this war was a prelude to the Russo-Japanese war that broke out just a decade later. This forgotten conflict set the stage for many important events to follow and gave the Japanese a taste of conquest and victory.
