Usually, fighting in your own territory is a big boon. That is correct. But you also have the tradeoff of having your country destroyed so... kind of a tradeoff.

Vietnam won the war against the USA, for example, but the nation was ravaged. The US mainland wasn't touched at all. But we ultimately lost.
