Tower Climbers: Those With A Fear Of Heights Need Not Apply
Who changes the bulbs on cell and television towers?
The world is filled with absolutely massive television and radio towers, many of which are among the tallest buildings on the planet. If you look at a list of the tallest structures in the United States, you will see transmission towers topping the list for many states. These towers transmit radio, television, and cellular service to people over hundreds of miles and have become cornerstones of modern electronic infrastructure.
Each of these towers is filled with electronic devices, cables, and lights. The lights are critically important to ward off low-flying planes and helicopters. So what happens when these lights go out? By law, these towers must be illuminated at all times. When one of these lights goes out, a team must be dispatched to replace it in a timely manner. A person has to climb to the top, scaling ladders that often soar over a thousand feet into the sky before replacing the light bulb by hand. These people are called tower climbers, and they do one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
