There is an adage in the Navy community. If you want to survive the next war, join the Navy. Navy families are well aware that serving on a warship is often far safer than becoming an airman, soldier, or marine. There is some truth to this idea. The Navy has been a relatively safe service to join since the end of the Cold War. Casualties are low, and major navies operate with near impunity around the world. However, that is likely to change soon.

New technologies are coming onto the scene that are going to make the next naval engagements more dangerous than they have been since World War II. From hypersonic missiles to drones, there is a wealth of new technologies that are being developed with naval warfare specifically in mind.

Many people worry that the next major global conflict could involve the United States, Australia, Japan, and China. China and the United States have the world’s largest two navies and have been posturing in the Pacific for years. A major new naval conflict will unleash all of the new technologies being developed aimed at sinking major warships.
