Most people can name the world’s tallest mountain — let’s all say it together — Mount Everest. The trivia inclined can even name the height which is roughly 29,000ft. It is easy to be famous for being big.

If you asked the same people that confidently shout out the name and elevation of the world’s tallest mountains what the world’s smallest mountain is, you are sure to be met with blank stares. While Everest’s summit is nestled in the heart of Earth’s tallest, most majestic and fearsome mountain range, the world’s smallest mountain is nestled alongside a quaint Australian town of 600 in Victoria province.

Meet Mount Wycheproof, a hill that proudly stands over mostly harmless, flat, grasslands. It is the world’s smallest mountain.

The definition of mountain

How can we be sure that this mound of earth is actually a mountain and that it is the world’s smallest mountain compared to say, other hills, which are taller?

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of a mountain reads as follows:

noun — a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings and is higher than a hill
