Nestled in the mountainous regions of southwestern China rests a UNESCO World Heritage Site that receives far less attention than it deserves. The Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area anchors the southern end of the Minshan Mountains. The park is home to travertine pools that look like something out of the prehistoric era. The whole area is ringed by majestic snowcap mountains. Tall trees are sprinkled between bubbling steaming hot springs. There are eclectic limestone formations and burbling waterfalls. The whole area looks like something out of nature’s very own dreams.

But that is not all. This area is also home to some of the world’s most beloved animals, including the giant panda and golden snub-nosed monkeys.

These pools took thousands, possibly millions, of years to form as calcite deposits. Water flowed through this region, shaping the pools and transforming the landscape.
