Numerous studies have found strong positive benefits linked to spending time in nature. Going outside, getting some fresh air, camping, hiking, or even sitting on the beach, all have notable positive impacts on mental and physical health. The American Psychological Association says that time in nature can lead to “improved attention, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders and even upticks in empathy and cooperation.” There have been numerous scientific and psychological theories speculated as to why this is, but the real answer can be found in theology, not psychology.

God created nature and said that it was good. In fact, God created everything. Life, the stars, the beaches, the mountains, everything. Nature is the work of God’s hands, not human hands. Everything that gives people peace of mind was created by God. Humans did not create the beaches, nor did they invent trees that give so much tranquility. People create cities and build civilizations. We invented cars and smartphones and online banking and all of the things that increase stress rather than decrease it.

The Bible is clear on what idolatry is. Idolatry is giving credence to things made by human hands over the things made by God’s hands. And that is a shame.
