Vicksburg was one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. General Grant’s siege of the so-called fortress city on the banks of the Mississippi River was a critical moment that shaped the future of the conflict and dealt a devastating blow to the Confederacy. The loss of Vicksburg effectively cut the Confederate States of America in two. The river was vital to supplying the war effort and losing control of the lower Mississippi was crippling.

The battle took place around the strategically important city of Vicksburg. Vicksburg was a hub of river trade and the location of an important railhead. Today, most of that is still true. The Battle of Vicksburg lives on at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The park is run by the National Park Service and is stunning and surprising in many ways.

I visited the park as an avid fan of history and was struck by many different things. Here are the things that impressed me the most.
