The Two Party System Is Destroying The United States
The political system in the United States is broken. The fact that our ballots are going to read Donald J Trump and Joseph R Biden Junior this upcoming November tells me that something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. Voting for either one of these people gives me a lot of trepidation but those, somehow and inexplicably, are my only options. How did it come to this?
The Democrats and Republicans have won every presidential election since 1852. They have controlled Congress, either or, since 1856. They both scream that the other is the problem but they have, collectively, run this country for nearly two hundred years. They managed to crush every other political party and any murmur of dissent is ruthlessly put down.
Have you ever mentioned voting for a third party recently? The libertarians perhaps? Maybe the Green Party could use your vote. Any breath or mention of a third party is met with instant hostility and derision.
They’ll never win.
What a waste of a vote.
A vote for them is a vote against the party you most agree.
We’ve all heard this before and it keeps every voting American dutifully in line. The results have been a two party system that looks completely bizarre in the context of other global democracies. Yet it also feels unchangeable and inevitable.
The Dirty Secret of Political Parties
The Democrat Party and the Grand Old Party (GOP) are private institutions that have a monopoly on the election cycle in the United States. They are not a part of the government, they are not very democratic and their goals, while heavily disguised as the will of the people, are usually self serving. They are the largest lobbying groups in the history of the world and they have locked down the political system of the most powerful country on earth.
When you look at their inner workings, the money spent on issues, money raised, information tactics and primary election rules, the two parties begin to look more and more insidious. It is hard to feel as though either has your best interest at heart.
Is it not strange that right before Super Tuesday in the 2020 election cycle that all of the other viable candidates on the Democrat side dropped out — some literally mere hours before the vote? The people’s voice was not to be heard, it was not to be trusted. In fact, some votes did not count due to early voting and mail in voting. They had a plan and the voters were not a part of it.
How can this happen? Because these parties are not public, they are private. They make the rules, they decide how to spend their money and their say is final. All they do is back candidates for the ballot and are very much private organizations.
Neither one of these political parties carry very much debt, considering the size and influence they have. Yet, they advocate for constant debt for the nation as a whole. They vote to spend us into oblivion every year. Both sides of the aisle have no regard for the finances of the United States government yet run their own very meticulously. Curious.
Many people complain about having to vote for the “lesser of two evils” every two years because that’s all we get to choose between. There has to be a better way forward, right?
Keep ’Em Separated
Divide and rule, the politician cries;
Unite and lead, is watchword of the wise. — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Lately, the strategy of the two parties seems to be to divide and conquer. They use their surrogates in the media, online personalities and official statements to constantly vilify the opposing side. Each side comforts their members by telling them they are morally right, on the right side of history and that the opponent is trying to destroy you and your way of life. By pitting the American people against one another, they have ensured that each group is wholly focused on the other meaning they will not try to bridge the divide and they will not look elsewhere.
Will the Libertarian Party be able to stop the encroachment of the Democrats on your freedoms? Hardly!
Will the Green Party be able to stop the evil Republicans from entering your bedroom and controlling your body? Not this century!
They have pitted us so wholly against one another that they have diverted much criticism away from themselves and in doing so, they have also stifled any opposition they might encounter during an election cycle. Who else has the money, the experience and the fortitude to fight this battle but the Democrats and Republicans?
You can see this in their language, it is meant to pit the two parties against one another in order to keep the status quo.
We can, and we must, restore the soul of our nation. We don’t have to give in to Donald Trump’s dark, petty, angry vision of America. — Joe Biden
In the meantime, people are suffering because of the Democrats. So we’ve created, and they’ve created, and they’ve let it happen — a massive child-smuggling industry. — Donald Trump
Joe Biden had it right from the start. It’s a battle for the soul of the nation. — Washington Post headline
Here are all the times Joe Biden has been accused of acting inappropriately toward women and girls — Business Insider headline
They color everything so starkly. It’s always a war, a battle, a fight. The other side is evil. They want to take your guns, your speech, your rights. The other guy wants to see your way of life burn. They will change everything and it will be worse than it is now. That is the language they use but it is simply not true.
If you go out to any small town, or downtown in America and walk around most people are going to have a fine time. America has its problems, yes. The political parties know that. But if you want to go to a Starbucks or mom and pop coffee shop on a Saturday morning in America you will never know who is a Democrat and who is a Republican.
Americans are charitable. Americans love freedom. For the most part, we love each other. Many times we just want to raise our families and live a life that makes us feel fulfilled. We want a life where we can be left alone, have fun and love our friends and family. Americans want to worship or not worship the way they want. They want justice and freedom for all people.
If you tune out politics and the news, our neighbors are just that, neighbors. We have more in common than we have in animosity towards one another. I fully believe that.
The parties are terrified that the American people will wake up and realize that they are the cabal that needs to be taken down. We’re tearing down statues of historical figures, we should be (figuratively) tearing down the edifices to these two political parties.
That is why Bernie Sanders scared them so much, he was an independent at heart. That is why they hate Trump, he commandeered the Republican Party but hes not a real Republican. Not really. He was a profiteer first, a Democrat second and a Republican last. People like them are dangerous to the two party status quo they have built and they know that. That is why they have faced such strong headwinds in the media and from each party.
If people could more effectively channel this populist furor, which clearly is gaining steam on both sides of the political spectrum, then there could someday be a viable third party, or even fourth party, candidate to vote for.
The Donald vs. Uncle Joe
If this match up feels like a dystopian nightmare you are not alone. But if you are sick about voting for either one of these people, remember that they are our choices not because people voted this way but because the parties deemed it so.
I already mentioned the strange dropouts of Democratic candidates right before the largest primary day, paving the way for Joe Biden to secure a victory without having to work very hard.
Would Republicans have voted Trump out of office in a primary if given the chance? We will never know because there was never a true challenge allowed to happen. A primary for an incumbent would be damaging to the party. I would not have voted for Trump or Biden in a primary in 2020 but I wasn’t given that option. And neither were you.
This is a match up that we did not choose but one that was given to us by the people who control the entire political process in the United States of America. And why not? They control the levers of power to the richest, most powerful and most influential country in the world. If absolute power corrupts absolutely, what can we deduce about the Democrat and Republican Parties who have been in absolute power for 164 uninterrupted years? Their power is their focus, we come second. That is becoming more and more abundantly clear.
What Can We Do?
First, remember that there were once other major political parties in this country. Parties such as the Federalists, Whig, Democratic-Republicans (ironic) and others have risen and fallen in our history. It is possible to topple a major political party it just takes time and effort.
Second, more people need to try and run third party. Damn it if they say it can’t be done. It can. I promise you it can be done. It won’t be easy but it can be done. There are a few independents in the government today and there can be more in the future.
There needs to be a more independent party. Independents are called so because they are free of the domineering influence of the two tyrannical political parties. It must be nice.
The GOP and the DNC wield money like a club to beat people into submission. Run against us or the platform and you don’t get this sweet, sweet cash. Trade your values for dollar dollar bills. And many people do.
There is room for a Progressive Party. There is room for a Conservative Party. There is room for a larger Libertarian Party. There is room for an independent centrist party, yet to be named. There is political room for change here.
Many conservatives do not agree with Donald Trump’s policies. Especially on national finances and his method of speaking. Many progressives do not like centrist Democrats who they feel have watered down great causes. Libertarians don’t agree with conservative social values. Independents feel queasy about both. Yet, we all get just two choices come November.
That can change. And if this country really wants to heal, grow and move forward from a truly disastrous decade it needs to change.
Here are the three minor political parties active in the United States. Bernie Sanders had a chance to found the Democratic Socialist Party but failed to do so. There is room here to make real change.
Can you imagine the outrage and fear that they would feel if a Libertarian won a senate seat? What if a Green Party candidate won a district in the House of Representatives? Or how about someone runs, independent, as a Democratic Socialist and gets on the presidential ballot?
These two parties keep telling us that there are major problems in this country, they keep blaming each other, they blame me, they blame you. I think its time we all start blaming them.
