The Truth About Galileo and The Church
One of the most misunderstood and misrepresented stories in history
One of the most enduring myths about church history, Christianity, and science has to do with the famous scientist Galileo Galilei. Many people believe that Galileo was imprisoned by the Catholic Church for his heretical views concerning the motion of the Earth around the sun. The event is used as an example of how the church is backwards, anti-science, and anti-freedom. But this is only one very small facet of the debate that was truly taking place.
The story of Galileo versus the Church isn’t so much about science versus religion as it was a clash of personalities. Galileo’s fate had little to do with science and much to do with personal grievances. In fact, at the time, many of Europe’s most prominent scientists, thinkers, and even astronomers were Jesuits.
So what really happened? And why do most people still see this event through such a simplistic lens?
