There is an area of Texas stretching from Round Top to Segovia that has a heavy German influence. It is a belt of land that roughly splits the gap between the major cities of San Antonio and Austin. In this strip of land, you find names like Schulenburg, Fredericksburg, and New Braunfels. These towns feature Lutheran churches, German-American societies, and beer gardens. If you have never experienced this before, it can be jarring to stumble across a pocket of German heritage in the heart of Texas.

Unlike most places in the United States featuring German heritage, immigration to this part of the world was not natural. Unlike places like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin, German immigrants were not rushing to leave their homeland and settle near San Antonio. The German features in Texas were carefully crafted and are the remnants of a colonization scheme that could have only been hatched in the 19th century.
