Millau is a small city located at the confluence of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers in France. The city is located along a popular route connecting Paris to Spain. During the holiday months, thousands of travelers pass through this region going to and from Spain and the southern French coast. This traffic caused serious congestion in the 1980s and 1990s. In response, the French launched a series of studies to consider building a bridge over the Tarn river valley and gorge to increase the speed of traffic and reduce the amount of congestion on the ground.

After years of study, discussion, and planning, France decided to embark on an ambitious building project, which resulted in the creation of the Millau Viaduct Bridge. The Millau Viaduct Bridge is a multispan cable-stayed bridge that was built between 2001 and 2004. At the time, it was the tallest bridge in the world with a height of 1,125 feet. Today, it remains the tallest bridge in the world (at least, for now.)
