Nestled in a rural corner of Southwest Arkansas is a state park where visitors come to search for diamonds. The park is located over an ancient volcanic pipe that has pushed a large number of diamonds to the surface over the course of millions of years. The land was even once home to a diamond mine where private investors and the US government moved tons of earth in search of brilliant gems. Today, you can scour the ground yourself for a glimpse of a sparkling diamond. Over the years, some of the most iconic diamonds ever unearthed in the United States have come out of the dusty fields of Crater of Diamonds State Park. Some of these diamonds are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and others have even ended up in the Smithsonian.

So what’s the catch? Can you really just pick up diamonds that you find on the ground? The answer to that question is yes. There is no catch. If you find a diamond, you get to keep it — no matter what the value.
