Imagine a sword that is perfectly balanced and impossibly sharp. The blade is made from nearly pure copper and is inlaid with an intricate pattern and mysterious runes. Many would think that such a description would be fit for a fantasy novel, not a history book. But in fact, there is a mystical sword that exists today that has all of these mythological qualities.

The Sword of Goujian is a Chinese blade that is 2,400 years old. The sword remains sharp after thousands of years and is mesmerizing to look at. When the blade was discovered, it must have felt like something out of a tale of destiny. The blade was uncovered from an ancient tomb that had been partially submerged in river water for thousands of years. The sword was clutched between the skeletal fingers of an ancient lord. The blade was housed in a wooden scabbard that was nearly airtight.

Imagine the surprise when the archeologists unsheathed the sword to find an immaculate copper blade that was still sharp enough to kill. It is a tale that would make Indiana Jones weak with jealousy. But it all happened just like that in 1965 along the banks of the Zhang River in China.
