The world is filled with a number of extreme points. Many of them are well known and well traveled. Numerous people have made it to the North Pole and even the South Pole. Hundreds of people climb to the top of Mount Everest because it is the tallest point on Earth. However, very few people have hiked to the point on Earth that is farthest from any ocean. On a planet that is comprised of over 70% water, finding the point that is farthest from these oceans is challenging.

This point is known as the Eurasian Pole of Inaccessibility. It is a deserted and arid plot of land lying near the remote border between China and Kazakhstan. This point is 1,644 miles from the nearest ocean.

Location

  • Approximate coordinates: 46°17′N 86°40′E
  • Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert region of Xinjiang, China.

The point is located deep in the Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert in Xinjiang, China, surrounded by vast stretches of arid land, steppe, and deserts. There are no major cities nearby, and it’s extremely difficult to reach by land. Unlike other notable points, there are no landmarks or wild views to document. The pole is more of a scholarly curiosity than a tourist attraction.
