The most remote point on our planet lies in the middle of the Southern Pacific Ocean. This point, named Point Nemo, is the position on the planet that is the farthest away from land in all directions. Point Nemo is what is known as a pole of inaccessibility, meaning it is the hardest to get to position in that region. In this case, it is the hardest to reach point out of any ocean on Earth. The closest specks of civilization to Point Nemo are the Pictarin Islands and Easter Island to the north, both of which lie over 1,600 miles away. And few people would hardly call the Pictarins the picture of bustling civilization. To the south lies Antarctica, another isolated outpost with hardly a soul around.

The position is named after Jules Verne’s classic character, Captain Nemo. Because when you find yourself adrift in the middle of the South Pacific, the only place to go is down.
