The Other Great Wall
And why you probably have never heard of it
If you ask people to list famous walls, the answer will likely consist of the Great Wall of China, Hadrian’s Wall, the Berlin Wall, and perhaps the Western Wall. And that is probably going to be it. How many other famous walls are there? There is one famous wall that never seems to make the list despite its length, size, and grandeur. That wall is the Great Wall of Gorgan. If you have never heard of it, it is not alone. Like so many other structures before it, the Great Wall of Gorgan has crumbled away and faded into the mists of time. And that is a shame.
The wall stretches from the banks of the Caspian Sea and snakes its way east into the high mountains of northeastern Iran. The wall still resides north of the eponymous city of Gorgan in Iran.
The Great Wall of Gorgan is only surpassed in length and overall size by the Great Wall of China. It is larger and more impressive than every other wall ever built in human history. So why is it so forgotten? Why was it built? How big was it?
