The assassination of Abraham Lincoln (Public domain)

April 15th, 1865 shocked the world when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while attending a theater production. The assassination came just a week after the end of the Civil War and was one final tragic blow to punctuate America’s bloodiest war. After the shot rang out in the theater, the president was rushed to surgery to try and save his life.

Despite the efforts to save the president’s life, Lincoln died just hours later after being moved from the theater to a nearby house. During the medical attempts to keep Lincoln alive, the doctors removed his clothes and emptied his pockets of belongings. Many of the items were standard for the time but one item was found which is considered an oddity.

Confederate currency

A Confederate $5 bill (Public domain)

Many of the items found in President Lincoln’s pockets were usual. There was a pair of glasses, a handkerchief, a pocket knife, and a watch. The president also had a brown leather wallet not all that dissimilar to the wallets carried by many Americans today. Inside that wallet, the surgeons found a folded bill.
