The 175th anniversary of Switzerland’s first railroad doesn’t sound like an important milestone, but industry leaders in the alpine nation came together to make the occasion very special. Train makers and operators from across the nation assemble the longest passenger train in history. The attempt was aimed at breaking the world record spectacularly. Preparations for the event took months, featured top-of-the-line Swiss electric engines, and took place on one of the most breathtaking stretches of track on the planet.

After safety concerns and a lot of logistical maneuvering, the event went off without a hitch. The world’s longest passenger train chugged along at a leisurely 15mph and cruised straight into the history books and the record books.

By The Numbers

The world’s longest passenger train was comprised of 100 individual cars and weighed nearly 3,000 tonnes. The train was made possible through a collaboration between Rhaetische Bahn and Stadler, two Swiss companies that are giants in the rail industry.
