The 20th century will go down in history as the time of the tank. The battle tank was invented during World War I, where it saw early combat breaking entrenched positions. After World War I, the first armored combat vehicles, which resembled water tanks, evolved into interwar tankettes. The tankettes then grew into heavily armored main battle tanks.
World War II saw some of the largest tank battles in history, with hundreds of armored vehicles on both sides duking it out in places like France and Russia. Names like Kursk have been immortalized due to the many tanks that flooded the field.
Tanks saw their most famous actions during World War II. The Korean War and the Vietnam War saw limited tank engagements compared to the previous wars. The tank was supplanted by the jet, and the missile as the most effective and feared weapons of war. But the tank would make a major comeback during one of the shortest and most decisive wars of the 20th century — The Persian Gulf War.
