“Amazing Grace” is one of the best known hymns of the modern era. It speaks to everyone, Christian and nonbeliever alike. It speaks of transcending wretchedness, it has imagery of chains breaking, it is a tale of rescue and glory. For that reason, it has long been associated with times of trouble and holds a special place in the African American community. However, the man who wrote this iconic hymn was complicated.

John Newton was a sailor who was despised in his youth. He was a slaver, a drunk and eventually a convert. His long shadowed path is what fueled the faith that would eventually give us some of the best hymns of the past three centuries.
