The Highest Paved Road In North America
Not everyone wants to hike to high elevations
Hiking at high elevations is strenuous and in rare circumstances, it can be dangerous. The pay off is usually amazing and prominent elevations offer some of the most spectacular views in the world. However, not everyone wants to or is able to, hike on foot to high elevations. Luckily, thanks to amazing engineering and persistence there are some seriously high roads in North America.
The highest paved road in North America is the Mount Evans Scenic Byway in Colorado. The road snakes up a section of the Rockies and deposits drivers near the summit of Mount Evans. The mountain is located roughly two hours outside of Denver and the drive is one of the best in the state.
By The Numbers
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway was opened in 1991 and takes drivers on a long route through the Rocky Mountains. There are numerous glacial lakes and overlooks along the road which offer stunning views of the natural area.
The road runs for a total of 49 miles and connects the towns of Idaho Springs and Bergen Park.
