The Destruction Of Titanic’s Ill-Fated Twin Britannic
A massive oceanliner destined for the abyss
Everyone knows about the tragic sinking of the Titanic. The massive cruise ship struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage. What few people realize is that the Titanic was one of three Olympic-class ships operated by White Star Line around World War I.
The Titanic sank in 1912, and it would not take long for her sister to sink as well. In the course of just four short years, White Star Lines\ would lose two of its three flagship vessels. It was a heartbreaking turn of events. Even though the Titanic is a household name, few people remember the fate of the Britannic.
The Britannic
The Britannic was launched after the sinking of the Titanic. Britannic was the sister ship to the Titanic and was nearly identical in every way. Many lessons were learned when Titanic went to the bottom of the Atlantic. The hulls of the next two ships, Olympic and Britannic, were reinforced. More lifeboats were installed on board, and the existing lifeboat designs were updated and upgraded. Everything was reviewed to ensure that if another one of these mammoth ships went down, it would not cause such a massive loss of life.
