The Cynical Reason You Have To Be 21 To Buy Whipped Cream In NY
Asinine or prudent?
If you want to buy some creamed goodness in the state of New York, prepare to whip out your ID. Thanks to a new law that went into effect in late 2021 you must be at least 21 years of age to buy whipped cream. The reason? You might want to huff the stuff to get high.
Instead of seeing kids looking for a sweet treat the state of New York sees them as little druggies looking for their next high. Whipped cream canisters use nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to push the cream out in the beautiful swirls that so many people love. Unfortunately, the cynical people in Albany believe that these canisters are being used to fuel inhalant abuse in the adolescent population.
Now, nearly a year after the law went into effect New York stores are being pressured to start enforcing the new rule. Experts cite CDC data saying that 20% of youth have tried inhalants. I’m no expert, and I can’t think of any reason why anyone would doubt the CDC in 2022, but I find that number highly suspect.
There are 73 million children in the United States and the CDC wants us to believe that 15 million of them are going around and getting high on inhalants. And the state of New York agrees that that sounds like a reasonable figure.
