Most gardens are built to be enjoyed by people. They are filled with fragrant and colorful flowers, ornamental trees, and carefully pruned shrubs. Gardens are almost always benign. They are symbols of peace and tranquility. That is why the Poison Garden, located within Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland, England, is so unique and so shocking.
Alnwick Garden has been in existence for over 250 years, dating back to the year 1750. The gardens have always been tended to by the dukes and duchesses of Northumberland and sit beside Alnwick Castle.
Alnwick Gardens have gone through periods of disuse and revitalization. The most recent period of revitalization began around the year 2000. In 2005, the Poison Garden was added to the grounds. The idea behind the Poison Garden was to create something that would make Alnwick’s gardens stand out from the thousands of similar botanical parks around the world. The plan worked.
