TToday, it is easy to walk around a crowded street and see people with their noses deep in their phone screens and decry the rise of the phone game. With billions of downloads, the most popular apps and games have surely wasted thousands of hours of people’s lives over the years. How disgraceful! They could be reading a book.

However, using games to amuse ourselves is not a new issue that arose from the rise of modern society. In fact, people have been inventing and playing board games for thousands of years.

Board games have been around since the very dawn of civilization. Not only are we still playing these games, thousands of years later, but there are even phone application adaptations of the most ancient of games.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The game of backgammon dates back roughly 5,000 years. Unlike many ancient games, this one has not only survived until the present day but has also remained largely the same for the entirety of its lifespan.
