The largest company you’ve never heard of
Since Russia’s bold invasion of neighboring Ukraine there have been many people around the world asking themselves if Taiwan could be next. If a large neighbor of a smaller, more vulnerable, country can get away with naked aggression in pursuit of their long term goals it might embolden China to act against Taiwan. However, that might not be the case. Taiwan has something that Ukraine and other countries simply do not have. Taiwan has companies like TSMC.
If I asked anyone on the street what TSMC stands for, I would likely get more blank stares than I would correct answers. TSMC stands for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and it is a company that safely resides on the list of largest companies in the world as determined by market cap. TSMC is the largest and most important country that you have never heard of.
TSMC makes semiconductors. Moreover, they make the lion’s share of the world’s supply of semiconductors. Semiconductors are critical components of thousands of high tech products around the world from business computers to surface-to-air missile systems. Most of these components’ lives begin in a foundry run by TSMC.
