When people hear the words Star Wars, they automatically think of the gargantuan media empire owned by Disney, featuring nine mainline films and countless spin off projects. But star wars were real. There were a series of epic conflicts that shook the ancient Mayan Empire to its core over a thousand years ago. These were actual wars. Not science fiction.

The term star war stems from the fact that the Mayans used specific glyphs to denote the severity of their wars throughout history. Some wars were simple regional affairs, while others were all-encompassing conflicts with the potential to reshape Mayan society for generations. The latter wars were denoted by a glyph containing a star showing the Earth with rain or starlight. Every time this specific symbol appears, it denotes a large conflict. The presence of these unique glyphs in connection with severe wars led epigrapher Linda Schele to dub these conflicts star wars.

Examples of Star Wars

While records from ancient Mayan civilization are sketchy due to a lack of large amounts of written material and the destruction of Mayan society overall, anthropologists and archeologists have managed to eke out some details from this murky period of history.
