History is home to some truly fascinating and intriguing bits that are rarely remembered today. One such topic is that of sports that have gone extinct for various reasons. Many of these sports were culturally significant for their respective reasons. Many involved the mistreatment of animals, which is what ultimately led to their downfall. They are all wild, insane, and fascinating. These defunct sports are an excellent window into the past.

Here are six insane sports that are extinct today.

1. Hestavíg

Hestavíg was a Nordic sport that involved two stallions fighting in front of a crowd. The sport was extremely popular during the Viking Age, especially in Iceland. The sport was held for a variety of culturally important reasons. The spectacle was considered entertainment and always drew a crowd. The winning stallion was considered to be a superior animal and was given extra consideration as good breeding stock.

Hestavíg was also used as a way to forge bonds between rival chieftains. Official bouts were held at neutral sites where each side…
