Should Medium Ban AI Generated Content?

Questions about content, characters, and writers

Recently, I had just gotten to the bottom of an article (that shall remain unnamed) that had been strategically placed at the top of my feed. My mouse pointer lazily made its way over to the CLAP button when I jolted to a halt. The last line of the article, at the very bottom, below the conclusion and the links to other pages, was a single innocuous looking line.

P.S. Some of the content of this article is AI generated.

Needless to say, I did not give any claps. The fact that I had spent time, nay, wasted time, reading through an eight minute long article only to discover it was some ChatGPT word vomit was highly disconcerting. I have two serious problems with this that have been turning over in my brain, and my stomach, since I saw that shy admission.

  1. Generating AI content takes little to no effort.
  2. This “author” is going to potentially make a decent amount of money from this piece. A piece they didn’t actually write.

Maybe it is because I spend a lot of effort on my writing that this bothers me so much. Some days, my content is not as high quality as I want it to be. But instead of turning to AI to generate some fluffy junk to post for the sake of money, I gut it out…
