Russians are being fired en mass from their jobs around the world following their home country’s invasion of Ukraine. While what is occurring in the Ukraine is clearly tragic and unjustified, does the actions of a person’s government reflect their status as a human being? That is the question being asked by companies and organizations around the world and so far the answer seems to be yes.

On the one hand, people readily acknowledge that Russia is an authoritarian state under the leadership of one strongman, Vladimir Putin, while on the other hand average Russian citizens are being called to account for the actions of that one man. Simply put, it isn’t fair.

Does the Russian singer Anna Netrebko have any bearing on the actions of Russia’s military in Ukraine? I doubt it. Up until just recently she was working as a professional in New York City. But that didn’t stop the Metropolitan Opera from firing her simply because she is initially from Russia.

A Russian restaurant in Washington DC was vandalized simply for carrying the name Russia House. Were the cooks and owners deployed to Ukraine? Doubtful.
