Russian Forces Attack Chernobyl Creating An Odd Scene
Truth is stranger than fiction
In a scene that sounds more like a pitch for a new Call of Duty map than it does a news report Russian and Ukrainian forces are duking it out in the abandoned lands around the Chernobyl power plant. Russian forces targeted the old nuclear site during its invasion of Ukraine but the plans for the site are unknown at the time. Ukraine put up a fight in the area around the nuclear exclusion zone to prevent the Russian forces from claiming the site as their own.
As of 1:00 PM ET on February 24th, 2022, Russian forces claimed victory at Chernobyl. According to a Ukrainian official, the power plant was lost and is now currently under the control of invading Russian military elements. The old nuclear plant was secured after an intense gun battle. It is a headline that reads like something out of the Twilight Zone or from Cold War fiction than it does reality.
In fact, the town of Pripyat was the setting for various Call of Duty maps over the years that pit shady Russian special forces against plucky Western special forces.
The fact that this type of battle actually happened today shows how reality is often stranger than fiction. Life imitates art.
