Robert E. Lee’s Last Major Victory In The Civil War

General Robert E. Lee is known for his many crafty victories during the American Civil War. Lee is seen as a clever tactician who managed to nullify many of the Union’s advantages on the battlefield. Under Lee, the Confederates were often outnumbered and outgunned. Despite his numerous victories and battlefield gambits, Lee ultimately lost the war, and therefore, his winning streak eventually came to an end.

As the Civil War dragged on, the Union numbers continued to grow. As Union General US Grant got more comfortable in his position, he was more willing to press his advantages. By the end of the Civil War, Grant was infamous for using his superior numbers and firepower to overwhelm Confederate positions — even at great cost.

But before the Confederates were finally ground down and trapped in the spring of 1865, Robert E. Lee managed to secure one last victory over his rival. Lee managed to goad Grant, an infamously aggressive general, into a battle which became one of the most lopsided in American history.

Lee’s army might have ultimately lost the war, but in this case, they very much won the battle.
