A brand new skyscraper now rises above Central Park in New York City. The official name of the tower is 111 West 57th Street but it is also known as the Steinway Tower after the old Steinway Building that occupies the base of the modern construct. The tower has been in and out of the news for many years for many different reasons. The tower recently opened to residents and is home to 60 posh condo units aimed at the world’s wealthiest people.

The World’s Skinniest Skyscraper

111 West 57th Street claims to be the skinniest skyscraper ever built. It has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1. The tower does stand out in the skyline as an extremely narrow building compared to the chunkier buildings of yore. Hong Kong pioneered so-called pencil skyscrapers during its building boom but the concept never really caught on in the United States.

111 West 57th Street claims the title because of its impressive height. The slender tower stands at 1,428 feet which makes it the third tallest building in New York City after One World Trade Center (1,776 ft) and the Central Park Tower (1,550 ft). The impressive height only accentuates the narrowness of the skyscraper.
