When I read about the new species of spider invading Georgia and South Carolina they sounded familiar. Large brightly colored spiders that swarm and coat everything with webs. It tickled a memory I had from when I was a child living in Japan. After a cursory web search I realized that these spiders were one and the same.
The Japanese Joro spider had somehow made it to the United States and apparently it is quite happy.
I lived with these spiders for years. In Japan they are quite prevalent. And by prevalent I mean everywhere. There is even an ancient Japanese folk myth about these spiders actually being beautiful women who can transform and lure unsuspecting men to their doom.
Now, the articles about the Joro spider are alarmist. Many scientists are warning that these creatures are going to spread rapidly over the whole of the eastern United States.
Don’t panic. These spiders are completely harmless. But there are some things you should know about them if you’re going to have to live with them.
