There has been a running gripe within the video game community that the quality, difficulty, and complexity of video games are rapidly declining. Some of this talk can be chalked up to inflated expectations and nostalgia for a time when people played video games when they were children. But there is something to the complaints. Video games are getting more casual, more normal and more widespread. The reason why that is is because the video game market is larger today than it has been at any point in history.

In the 1990s, video games were designed for nerds. The games were made to be complicated in order to show off brand new computer technology and keep a niche portion of the population engaged. Many people in the original video game community came from physical gaming which included things like Dungeons and Dragons. Today, the number of video gamers who have played an actual D&D campaign is likely minimal.
