Most people today have dabbled with Large Language Models like ChatGPT. Others have likely interacted with an AI chatbot without even realizing it. These systems are being integrated across modern life — from research labs to customer service lines — and this new form of Artificial Intelligence is taking the world by storm.

But not everyone is excited. Many people feel uneasy about what AI might mean for jobs, the economy, or even the future of the human race.

So, how do these AIs actually work? What powers systems like ChatGPT? And can regular people truly understand this technology — or is it too complex for the average person to grasp?

Training and Pattern Recognition

Large Language Models (LLMs) were trained on massive datasets that included millions upon millions of words and multiple terabytes of information. All of this information was fed through the model, and the AI was then asked to identify patterns.

Imagine you gave someone millions of books, articles, websites, and asked them to read everything, but not to memorize it word-for-word. Instead, you ask them to notice patterns in how people use language:
