Hello reader! Welcome to my single post pledge drive campaign. Medium recently launched a new subscriber tier that has a ton of benefits for the writers on this site. The new tier is called Friends of Medium, and it will pay out 4x as much money to authors for reads. That means that if you continue to read my content like you normally do, you will be boosting your support for me and authors like me by four times. That is huge!
So what is the catch? It costs more money. The cost for the new tier is $15 per month ($150 per year if you buy an annual subscription.) And that is no small ask. It is never fun to shell out more money for a subscription. Especially today when 70% of people believe the economy is getting worse, not better.
But the truth of the matter is that the online writing sector has been depressed for the last six months, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Ad revenue, engagement, and pay outs are down across the board for many writers. With the rise of things like ad blockers and AI generated content, the only way to get money into the hands of good writers is to pay them directly. That is what the Friends of Medium subscription aims to do.
