TThe Mongol’s created the largest land empire in human history. At its peak, the Mongol Empire stretched from the Sea of Japan to Europe and down into Asia Minor. Despite its inspiring distances, there are places that you would be surprised to hear that the Mongols invaded or tried to invade. It seemed that, for the Mongols, the world wasn’t enough. They wanted more.

These are five surprising places you did not know the Mongols invaded.

India

Beginning with increasing raids in 1221CE, the Mongols began a century of warfare against the Indian subcontinent. By the middle of the 13th century, the Mongols and their tributary states owned all of the lands north of present-day India. The subcontinent was hemmed in on three sides by lands and kingdoms controlled by the Mongols.

In 1235CE, the Mongols invaded and conquered Kashmir. From these lands, they launched numerous raids and incursions into the Indian heartland coming into contact with the Delhi Sultanate.
