There are two things that are painfully obvious in Christianity today. One, people take their orthodoxy for granted. Orthodoxy as we know it only emerged after centuries of intense debate, schisms, and theological disagreement. Hundreds of theologians across multiple ages and empires worked tirelessly to answer some of Christianity’s thorniest questions in ways that made sense and were consistent with what is known from ancient texts.

Two, most people think heresies are a thing of the past. That is false. There are numerous heresies that still proliferate within Christianity. The problem is that modern Christianity has been so dispersed that there are no longer any central power structures that can promote orthodoxy over heterodoxy or outright heresy.

The result is that most people are blissfully unaware that modern Christianity is a minefield of heretical views. Some of these heresies are ancient and have been around nearly as long as Christianity itself. Some are newer and more entrenched than ever before.
