Existential as in being bigger than the human parts. In the context of my article, frontiers were existential because they were large and unavoidable. They had an affect on nations whether people liked it or not. Today, that is no longer the case. The Romans had no choice but to interface with their frontiers. The forests, rivers and wastes were large, daunting and unfeeling.
