Drugs Are Killing As Many Americans As World War II
Startling statistics
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 106,363 Americans died due to drug overdose deaths in a 12-month period between August 2022 and August 2023. That is a staggering number of Americans. To put that in perspective, that is roughly the same number of Americans who were dying during World War II.
According to official statistics kept by the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), the United States lost 405,399 soldiers, with 291,557 dying in combat during World War II. The United States fought for four years, beginning in December 1941 and ending in September 1945. That equates to 101,350 deaths per year.
That means that there are more Americans dying of drug overdoses right now than there were dying during World War II. And not just by a little bit. There are 5,000 more Americans dying each year than there were during World War II.
World War II was America’s second deadliest war after the Civil War, and the entire nation banded together in the struggle. Yet, when it comes to overdose deaths, few people seem to bat an eye. The nation has no sense of purpose or direction when fighting the opioid crisis.
