Don’t Expect 2022 To Necessarily Be Better Than 2021
Pumping the brakes on unbridled optimism
Last year on New Year’s Eve, 2020, I was bombarded by choruses of 2021 cannot possibly be worse than 2020 to which I calmly replied — yes it can. This response rankled a lot of people and it was a refrain I stuck by. By all accounts 2020 was a turbulent year, it was pretty bad. But, contrary to my usual optimism, I felt that 2021 could be worse. No one else thought so, they all shushed me and said I was being a party pooper (I was not in fact being a party pooper, I was having a great time) but no one wanted to hear my message of quiet reality.
America was getting a new president. Vaccines were rolling out. Stimulus was piling up. All of these things bespoke of a better year ahead.
Yet, despite everyone assuring me that 2021 would be a great year, a better year, it wasn’t.
For many people 2021 was markedly worse than 2020.
It turns out, 2021 was a terrible year. In fact, 50% of Americans said in a recent survey that 2021 was the worst year of their entire lives.
I don’t want to be that guy who says I told you so… but I did say that this was possible.
