The Old Man and the Sea is one of the most famous works in literary history. Penned by Ernest Hemingway, the novella tells of a fisherman by the name of Santiago. Santiago is down on his luck and hasn’t bagged a good fish in nearly three months. His luck changes when he gets out to sea on his latest venture, and he hooks one of the largest fish he has ever seen. The fish is a giant marlin, and after battling the monster for three days, Santiago manages to lash it to his boat. But when he is returning home, hungry sharks swarm his catch and pick it clean. By the time he gets to shore, he has nothing but a skeleton and the world’s greatest fish tale to show for his troubles.
Last week, the crew of the competitive fishing team Sensation discovered in the worst way possible that life likes to imitate art. In a story that sounds eerily familiar to Hemingway’s classic, the men hooked a marlin that weighed nearly 620 lbs. The group was competing against 200 other fishing groups in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, taking place off the coast of North Carolina.
The fish was large enough to net them first place which came with a grand prize of $2.77m. Since the fish weighed over 500 lbs it also would have come with an additional $739,500 cash…
