An Open Letter To Everyone Complaining About Medium
Please stop
I really, really didn’t want to write this article but I felt like I had to. I get to vent about things too every once in awhile. To my consistent readers and followers thank you for your support and sorry in advance if this is not the kind of article you want to see. But sometimes, these things need to be said.
In the past two months, my news feed on Medium has been completely flooded with the same kinds of articles. There are articles complaining that Medium is dying, articles complaining about people not getting to 100 followers, and articles complaining that views and revenue are dropping. It is exhausting and annoying.
Newsflash: people don’t want to read about your number of views, followers, and revenue.
Seriously.
Do you know why your views are plummeting? Because no one wants to read about how your views are plummeting. It is a negative feedback loop. Views dip, the writer gets mad/self-conscious, the writer writes about their dip in views, no one reads it. Rinse and repeat.
I have to continuously dismiss stories from my feed that are in this vein, and yet they keep cropping back up like mushrooms. The algorithm thinks that I want to read stories about writing and Medium since I am a writer on Medium…
