In November 2004, Motorola changed the technological landscape in a monumental way when it released its masterpiece, the Motorola Razr V3. The Razr 3 would go on to take the world by storm. It quickly became the most popular phone in the world, and it held that spot for three years. The Motorola Razr 3 was the most popular phone among consumers in 2005, 2006, and 2007. It was the best-selling phone in the world all the way until 2008 (the year after the first iPhone came out.) Now, twenty years later, there is a lot of nostalgia for the Razr 3. So much so that fondness for Motorola’s flagship phone is what caused companies like Samsung to start developing the modern flip phone.

What made the Razr 3 so popular? Why was this phone so iconic while others were not? It really came down to some of the same things that people admire in phones today: style, functionality, and durability.

The original Motorola Razr wasn’t designed for mass consumption. It was a fashion piece created to show Motorola’s design chops. The first Razr came out in early 2004 and cost $600, which was pricey for the time.
