Politicians have been complaining about job loss for decades, but few of them talk about career extinction. While the loss of factory jobs can hurt a local economy, the loss of entire career fields can change history. As time and technology change, so too do the jobs. There was no such thing as a programmer 100 years ago, but today programming jobs are in high demand.

There have been many professions that have gone completely extinct, and many of them have nearly been forgotten. Here are seven interesting professions that have gone completely extinct.

1. Town Crier

(Public domain)

The town crier was a public official whose job it was to share important information with the public. These were not volunteers but professionals who were members of the local government or royal court. Many people back in the day could not read, and printing presses were in short supply. Information was furnished to the town crier, who would take it out onto the streets and shout it to everyone in earshot. The town crier would often ring a bell to let the town know that a message was about to be dispensed.
